DD1000 - art movement: art nouveau

ORIGINAL POST DATE: OCTOBER 9TH 2012
Art Nouveau is an art movement which lasted from 1890 to 1914, first developing in Europe and North America, but first established in Paris, France.
The goal was to create a distinctive style fit for the modern age, heavily inspired by decoration. It was part of the push to move away from old habits and sensibilities into something far more extraordinary, wherein all the old habits and art styles sat alongside the new and revolutionary, creating juxtaposition of ideas and themes around every corner. A lot of these artists and designers were thrilled by new technology, the massive leaps and advancements in our culture. Others seemed to be more in touch with myths and spirits, embracing the ethereal and strange side of our culture.
Art Nouveau designers believed that every form of art should be one, part of a massive all-encapsulating work of art. This of course would include paintings, buildings, textiles, furniture, clothes, ceramics, and jewellery. So of course, all of those mediums were touched by Art Nouveau in some way.
What I adore so much about Art Nouveau is just how far its influence reached, that even architecture and furniture was influenced by the movement, that it wasn’t confined to mere drawings or paintings. Every shape used within the construction of a building or the composition of an image was always very carefully chosen. Images, especially, all feel to have an otherworldly and ethereal air, as if the figures were so detached from humanity and existed in their own world away from us, distant. I love the mystery and the stylistic flair. Scenes are simple, yet the composition busy.
More than anything, Art Nouveau spices up an otherwise dull and uniform scene, and makes you look twice.
